Why Your Borehole Might Have Stopped Working

01

Pump Failure

The most common cause of a borehole stopping is pump failure. Submersible pumps wear out over time — typically after 10–15 years of normal use, sooner if they have been running dry, oversized for the borehole yield, or damaged by power surges. Signs include reduced water pressure, a humming sound with no water delivery, or complete stoppage.

02

Electrical Faults

Control box failure, damaged submersible cable, corroded connections, or a tripped breaker can all stop your pump from running even if the pump itself is fine. Electrical faults are common after lightning strikes, load shedding voltage spikes, or simply age. Sometimes the fix is straightforward — other times the control box or cabling needs full replacement.

03

Blocked or Scaled Casing

Over time, borehole casings can become restricted by mineral scale buildup, sediment accumulation, or bacterial slime. This reduces water flow gradually until the borehole effectively stops delivering usable water. Rehabilitation — cleaning and flushing the borehole — can often restore it to full performance without drilling a new one.

04

Dropping Water Table

During extended drought periods — which Gauteng experiences increasingly — the water table can drop below your pump intake. The pump runs but draws no water, often burning out in the process. This may require lowering the pump to a greater depth, or in some cases deepening the borehole entirely.

05

Foot Valve or Check Valve Failure

The foot valve prevents water from draining back into the borehole when the pump stops. When it fails, the pump loses its prime and delivers no water even though it is running. This is a relatively minor repair but requires pulling the pump to access the valve.

06

Pressure System Failure

Sometimes the borehole and pump are fine, but the pressure tank, pressure switch, or piping between the borehole head and your storage has failed. A waterlogged pressure tank or a failed pressure switch can mimic pump failure. We always check the full system, not just the borehole itself.

Can it be repaired without drilling a new borehole?

In most cases, yes. Pump replacement, electrical repairs, and rehabilitation resolve the vast majority of borehole failures. A new borehole is only needed in rare cases of complete casing collapse or permanent aquifer failure.

What To Do While You Wait

01

Check your electrical supply — confirm the breaker has not tripped and there is power reaching the control box.

02

Do not repeatedly try to start a pump that is not responding. Forcing a failing pump can cause permanent damage to the motor windings.

03

Check the pressure gauge on your pressure tank. Zero pressure with the pump running points to a pump or delivery issue, not a pressure system fault.

04

Look for obvious leaks in the pipework between the borehole head and your tank — a burst pipe can drain pressure without pump failure.

05

Call us. We can often narrow down the likely cause over the phone and give you a realistic expectation before anyone arrives on site.
